In April 2024, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) updated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to require state and local governments to make their websites and other digital content accessible. The requirement references Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1. It also set deadlines of:

  • April 24, 2026, for governments with populations of 50,000 or more
  • April 26, 2027, for governments with populations under 50,000

As counties, cities, and state agencies prepare for new accessibility requirements beginning in April of 2026, Amanda Beyer-Schulte sat down with the State of Minnesota’s Chief Information Accessibility Officer, Jay Wyant. As digital services become the primary way Minnesotans access important public information and resources, ensuring those resources are accessible to all is not just best practice, it’s also a legal requirement. With the U.S. Department of Justice’s recent update to Title II of Americans with Disabilities Act, all state and local government entities must now meet the specific digital accessibility standards for compliance on websites and mobile apps.

In Episode 7 of the MnCCC Blogcast, Jay shares his expertise in this important discussion on the future of digital accessibility in Minnesota. His leadership has guided Minnesota’s digital accessibility strategies.
